Stretching is used in several different ways, however the main idea is to lengthen the shortened tissue/muscles.

Passive stretching can be incorporated into general soft tissue treatment, this type of stretching is conducted by the practitioner with the patient making no conscious effort to contribute.

Static stretching can be done at home as part of your rehab program.

PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) is a great method of stretching where both the practitioner and the patient work together in contracting, holding and then lengthening the muscle group.

Stretching is gentle method of lengthening short muscles.
